Chapter 27

Several weeks had gone by since the end of the punishment, and even though it was over and she could now enjoy her well-earned additional rest, Nahia did not seem to be able to fully recover. She was not the only one. Lily and Daphne also seemed to struggle. The accumulated exhaustion did not seem to want to leave them entirely. The consequences remained. The sustained effort they had to make at weapons training, plus the supplement of physical exercise at the gym so they did not lag behind, did not aid their full recovery.

That evening they were all in the bedroom, getting ready to go to sleep, giving their bodies a chance to rest before the next day of tough training.

Sitting on her bed, Nahia was lost in her own thoughts.

“Everything all right?” Lily asked her.

“Yeah… I’m just tired… and a little worried.”

“Exhausted is the normal mood in this place,” Lily joked, poking her tongue out as if she could not bear even her soul.

“What’s bothering you?” Daphne asked Nahia as she lay on her own bed and watched her.

“What could possibly bother her here? Not dying tomorrow?” said Lily, raising her arms in an obvious gesture.

Nahia looked at the Scarlatum and nodded.

“Yeah, that too, but I was thinking about what happened in Tremia… Drameia.”

“We survived the mission, but I’m worried about the ones fighting there…”

“On our side or the other?” Daphne asked, raising an eyebrow.

“The other,” Nahia admitted, lowering her voice and looking at the screen that separated them from the boys.

“You’re worried about Lasgol, Camu, and the Norghanians you met? The ones we helped to free their friend Gerd from the war camp?” Daphne asked in a tone of interest.

Lily poked her head out of one end of the screen to see whether the boys were paying attention to their conversation, especially Aiden.

“Can we talk?” Nahia asked in a low voice.

“Yes, don’t worry, granite-head’s sleeping,” Lily nodded.

“I can’t get them out of my head. Them and Egil. We have to find a way to help them.”

“From what we saw at the battle of the capital, they’re pretty well off with those Norghanian Rangers,” Lily commented.

“And Lasgol was able to kill a dragon with his golden bow. I don’t know how he did it, I can’t even imagine it, but he did. We all saw the corpse of the great winged monster.”

Nahia nodded.

“But they won’t be able to hold out for long. The casualties they’re suffering are high. The capital will be taken and their forces will fall. The dragons don’t allow defeats. The red dragon king is the most savage and deceitful of all of them. He’ll go himself to destroy the city rather than suffer a defeat.”

“The casualties in our army are even greater,” Lily reminded her, looking sad. “And they’re innocent people, sent to die on the battlefield because they are slaves to the dragons.”

“Because of the dragon lords’ excessive greed and desire for conquest,” Daphne added.

“Yeah, and we are among them, let’s not forget that,” Lily said.
